What is a CV? (Curriculum Vitae)

A CV is a short document that tells employers or training providers about you, your skills, and what you can offer.

You will likely need a CV for:

  • part-time jobs

  • work experience

  • apprenticeships

  • college or training applications

Don’t worry if you’ve never had a job before, everyone starts somewhere.

What Employers Are Looking For

At your age, employers don’t expect lots of experience.

They are looking for:

✔ reliability

✔ good attitude

✔ willingness to learn

✔ teamwork

✔ communication

✔ punctuality

Showing you are responsible and motivated matters more than experience.

What to Include in your CV

    • Full name

    • Mobile number

    • Professional email address

    Tip: keep emails simple (e.g. firstname.lastname@email.com)

    You do not need to include your address or date of birth.

  • Write 2–3 sentences about yourself and what you’re looking for.

    Example:

    I am a reliable and hardworking student looking for a part-time role. I am punctual, friendly, and eager to learn new skills. I enjoy working with others and taking on responsibility.

  • Include:

    • your school or college

    • subjects you are studying

    • predicted or achieved grades (if known)

    Example:

    • GCSE Maths – predicted 5

    • GCSE English – predicted 5

    • BTEC Sport – Merit

  • Experience

    This does NOT have to be paid work.

    You can include:

    • work experience placements

    • volunteering

    • helping care for siblings

    • babysitting

    • helping neighbours or family members

    • school responsibilities (prefect, buddy, library helper)

    Example:

    School Open Evening Helper

    • Guided visitors around the school

    • Answered questions

    • Represented the school positively

  • Skills

    Think about what you do well:

    ✔ teamwork

    ✔ communication

    ✔ listening

    ✔ timekeeping

    ✔ organisation

    ✔ problem solving

    ✔ using computers & technology

    Give examples if possible!

  • This helps employers see your personality and strengths.

    You could include:

    • sports or fitness

    • gaming or tech skills

    • music, art, or creativity

    • awards or certificates

    • caring responsibilities

    • youth groups or clubs
